 Al Williamson rozpoczął swoją karierę komiksem John Wayne Comics w roku 1949 dla wydawnictwa Toby Press. Następnie pamiętne historię science fiction dla EC i paski gazetowe z historią Flash Gordon (1966-67). Weteran Wiliamson wrył się w pamięć fanów komiksów Star Wars rysując adaptację Imperium Kontratakuje i Powrotu Jedi dla Marvel Comics. Również ukazujące się przez ponad trzy lata prasowe paski komiksowe jego autorstwa zdobyły wielu zwolenników.
